Revisiting The End Of A Dynasty?

This year is the first time since 1984 that the same two teams face each other in the Stanley Cup finals in back-to-back seasons. TSN.ca compares this years final to the Islanders versus Oilers battles of '83 and '84. The dynastic, battle-hardened, veteran squad attempting to hold off the young upstarts.

Isles say these Wings are no match for the New York Islanders of the late 70's, early to mid-eighties.

Islanders Need To Draft The Best Available

TSN.ca reports Matt Duchene as "most complete forward"; a fan poll on the site gives a slight edge to drafting him over Hedman at the number 2 spot in the draft.

Isles say the Islanders need to draft the BEST forward (or defenseman) available at number one overall.

Isles say established and going strong since 1972.

Tavares AND Hedman

Ok so draft John Tavares already. There have been some rumblings of an option to get Hedman and Duchene. Instead.

Isles say let's get Tavares AND Hedman.

Not possible? Sure it is. Would be easier if a clause (a no brainer) in the Guerin trade also gave the Islanders the Pens '09 first round pick if Pittsburgh wins the cup, but we'll work with what we've got. The Islanders take Tavares first overall, Tampa Bay is on the clock. Tampa Bay trades the second overall pick in the 2009 NHL entry draft and forward Ryan Malone to the New York Islanders for the 26th and 37th picks in the draft and defenseman Mark Streit. The New York Islanders select, from Modo of the Swedish Elite League, defenseman Victor Hedman.

All Hail Al!

Al Arbour is the greatest coach in NHL history; his 1,500 games, 740 wins, and four straight Stanley Cups with the New York Islanders will attest.

Isles say that's a period folks!

Greatest Islanders Moment - May 24th, 1980

May 24, 1980 – Bob Nystrom scores at 7:11 of overtime against the Philadelphia Flyers as the Islanders win their first Stanley Cup. It was a moment of affirmation for many fans, me included.

Isles say the best moment in Islanders history.

Isles Make It Two!

On this day in 1981 the Islanders win their second Stanley Cup, defeating the Minnesota North Stars four games to one. Butch Goring wins the Conn Smythe Trophy.

Which was your favourite cup? Isles say the first one!

Thursday is Hat Day!

Isles say Happy Hat Day everyone!

Next Years' Top Line

So who do you think will be on the top line next year?

Isles say Okposo, Bailey, Tavares.

Friday, May 15, 2009

Streit for Lecavalier?

Would you trade Streit for Lecavalier? The Isles can choose whomever they want with the first pick. Obviously in this scenario the Isles take Hedman first overall, make the trade, and Tampa Bay takes Tavares second overall.

NYI get Victor Hedman and Vincent Lecavalier

Tampa Bay get John Tavares and Mark Streit

Isles say yes.

Who should be the new assistant?

Who should Gordon hire as his new assistant coach?

Isles say Denis Potvin!

David Volek Scores in OT

Do you remember this day 16 years ago? I remember it well. It was May 14th, 1993, David Volek scores at 5:16 of overtime as the Islanders stun the Pittsburgh Penguins, who were the two-time defending Stanley Cup Champions, four games to three in the Patrick Division Final.

The Islanders' ownership is pursuing a development for the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum and surrounding area. It may be vital to their survival on Long Island. Please support the Lighthouse Project.

It's Hat Day!

Isles say it's hat day here at IslesSay.blogspot.com. We'll start with an oldie, and a slogan that remains for millions of Islanders fans. Any good Isles hat stories out there?

islanderspointblank.com Says

Isles say Chris Botta has posted his thoughts on 'What should the Isles do after the first overall?' on his blog, islanderspointblank.com.

On this day in Isles history....

On this day in 1982 Mike Bossy scores a goal while in mid-air. The Isles win game three of the Stanley Cup Final versus Vancouver 3-0. The New York Islanders go on to win their third straight Stanley Cup with a sweep of the Canucks. What are your top five all-time favourite Islanders' goals?

Isles say number one on your list:

1.) May 24th, 1980, Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, 7:11 OT - "…Tonelli to Nystrom, he scores! Bob Nystrom scores the goal; the Islanders win the Stanley Cup."

What should the Isles do after the first overall?

So I'm going to skip the 'pick Tavares' poll and ask:
What should the Isles do with their remaining picks; keep 'em, trade up, trade for existing players, other?

Isles say they should not attempt to trade up. They should make all their own pics; and if an opportunity arises to trade back, add picks, and still get the player they want, they should do that. The Islanders need to stock their system with quality players. Drafts are about the scouting staff and they need to do a good job. That doesn't mean every pick must work out, but they must be at the top of the league in getting value from draft picks.
